WHAT INSPIRES US
by Anna / in Communication
Regular as clockwork, an email from Aesop appears in my inbox every month. It’s one of those rare emails that causes a shiver of anticipation as it appears. ‘Oh’, I think. ‘What nuggets of gold are they going to share with me this time?’
There is a comforting structure to the Aesop monthly newsletters. Forget recent news, their researchers dig deep to find unexpected highlights and insights from culture, history, science and art. The format is wise. You can skim through the headlines - or pause over a story which captures your interest. This month, one story in particular caught my eye.
‘Field of Light’ is an epic light installation, sitting beneath Australia’s sacred stone, Uluru. Featuring 50,000 illuminated flowers, the landscape at night (judging from the photos I’ve found) is breath-taking. Much like the poppies at the Tower of London, the scale of such an art work is compelling. Without even visiting Uluru, I can appreciate how the lights add extra significance to an already special place.
I’m a huge fan of James Turrell’s light art. Yet I’d never come across Bruce Munro before. Which brings me back to my original thought – that Aesop’s emails are beautifully scripted and excel at enticing you into discover more. I wonder what treasures will be in next months’ email?
