WHAT INSPIRES US
GRAYSON PERRY: ALL MAN
by Alastair / in Television
GP is becoming a go-to social commentator. I love him. He sticks to what he’s good at - making art in response to what’s going on around him - and through TV he has the perfect platform to access all sorts of people and situations. What this particular series made me think of was men who tend to hide and not reveal themselves. Why is this?
MAKING ART IN RESPONSE TO WHAT'S GOING ON AROUND HIM
GP touched on the tension around what I see as ancient and modern. Ancient in terms of the ingrained need for competition and ritual. And then there’s the modern man - in search of a higher purpose and looking for self-esteem. It’s when these things are threatened, ignored, marginalised or bruised that they must have an outlet to express themselves, often with explosive results. We talk a lot about self expression - how we express ourselves ultimately differentiates us. But in many men’s cases, it is what binds them together, the tribes of city traders, football supporters, barmy armies.
