WHAT INSPIRES US

DAVID HOCKNEY

by Alastair / in Creativity

On the top floor of the Salt Mills, Bradford, there are 33 new(ish) paintings by Hockney.  They were drawn on his iPad and here are reproduced large, filling the room with his trademark colours. There is repetition as he covers the same area close to his home in Yorkshire but following the change of seasons.  I loved the rhythm of seeing the same view gradually shift.

THE ARRIVAL OF SPRING

Reflecting on Hockney’s work is an exercise on reflection itself. He demonstrates an extraordinary ability to look at the same thing and see the differences. His observation skills are masterful. For him, familiarity is inspiration. Whereas so many creative minds look for inspiration by travelling and new experiences, Hockney’s creativity is fuelled by a love of home and the joy of watching nature unfold. His paintings are a celebration of the seasons, the cycles of life and that every moment counts because everything will change.
